As the title suggests, Frank Sinatra's 1967 TV special A Man & His Music & Ella & Jobim brings Sinatra together with Ella Fitzgerald, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra for a warm and diverse evening of pop, jazz, and bossa nova. In fine voice, Sinatra ranges from breezy, uptempo songs, like "Day in, Day Out" and "Get Me to the Church on Time," to smooth, quiet ballads, like the final song "Put Your Dreams Away." Sinatra and Fitzgerald's energetic duets include "Goin' out of My Head" and "Stompin' at the Savoy." Fitzgerald's "Body & Soul" and "It's All Right With Me" showcase her impeccable phrasing and scatting. Jobim turns up for a rendition of his classic "The Girl From Ipanema"; that he appears on only one song in the program is A Man & His Music...'s biggest disappointment, along with some rather forgettable performances of '60s pop songs like "Ode to Billie Joe" and "Up, Up & Away." On the whole, however, the show is well worthwhile for Sinatra and Fitzgerald fans, even if the DVD version is basically just a straight transfer of the program with no added features.
