One of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart’s finest songs, “My Funny Valentine” is a beautifully witty, perfectly constructed song which, unlike many from the same era, has not dated one bit. Although a popular standard, there have been relatively few successful versions of the song. Ella Fitzgerald recorded a lovely version, but the finest has to go to Frank Sinatra, who recorded the song with Nelson Riddle. It seems Sinatra and Riddle know instinctively at what tempo to record a song, and here they get it spot on. Sinatra’s phrasing, is, of course, unparalleled and adds a new depth of emotion to the song – it’s certainly the most heartbreaking and emotionally affecting version.
