The Mothers of Invention / Frank Zappa

Are You Hung Up?

Composed by Frank Zappa

Song Review by

The opening track on the LP We're Only in It for the Money, "Are You Hung Up?" is a short studio collage involving Frank Zappa talking to Suzy Creamcheese over the phone, engineer Gary Kellgren whispering that the guitarist hears everything from the control room ("Hello, Frank Zappa!") and Jimmy Carl Black proudly stating that he is "the Indian of the group" (a Mothers of Invention running gag here making its first appearance on record). This is also the first time Zappa portrays himself as some kind of omniscient tyrant, a theme that will become the center of the movie 200 Motels.
