The Austin, TX, band Western Keys, led by Post-Parlo records head Ben Dickey (formerly of Capsize and New Cuba), presents a bit of a conundrum for those quick to lump bands into the alt-country sphere. The group's tunes may be lathered, at times, in big weeps of pedal steel, but overall the music also inhabits the spheres of emo, indie rock and sloppy lo-fi. The loose overall aesthetic (shared by groups such as Bright Eyes and Silver Scooter) has been termed somewhat accurately "garage Americana." Western Keys, which also consists of Daniel McIntosh, Leslie Sisson, and John Troutman, released their debut EP, Damage, in late 2002 on the Self-Starter Foundation.
