Volume All*Star began in 1996 in the basement of pizza cook and part-time Up Records employee who simply called himself Steven. The use of a drum machine, a collection of dub records, a turntable, and a sampler (which Steven used to capture the sound of his dog licking his hand) resulted in a handful of noisy, hip-hop instrumentals. Captured on the demo Steven's Four Track Mess, this would not only be the beginning of Volume All*Star but also the first Slabco Records release. The album, Close Encounters of the Bump & Grind, was released in 1998 with an addition of a slicker production and melodic female vocals. Following the 1999 release of the Alpo Boy EP, Volume All*Stars' second album, Self-Connected/Twice-Elected, came out through Slabco in 2000.
