While it might be hard to fathom a diehard traditional country act originating from New York City, such is the case with the Dark Horses. Formed in 1997, the group honed its craft with a vibrant live show and mixing alternative with traditional country leanings. The band received praise in the Village Voice as a must-see act. The group entered the studio in 2000 and 2001 with Eric Amble to record its debut effort. The album, Come Along, was released in 2001 on Going Nowhere Music. The group has been compared to the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Eagles, but also have a roots rock content in the vein of the National and Wilco. The Dark Horses continue to tour the United States and especially in and around their hometown.
