Artist Biography

Playing Cajun music with striking authority and verve, this UK band was formed in 1991. Led by Chris Hall (b. 2 July 1952, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England; accordion/vocals), the band includes Mitch Proctor (b. David Proctor, 8 December 1952, Heanor, Derbyshire, England; fiddle, steel guitar, vocals), Murray Brailsford (guitar/vocals), and Sam Murray (drums). Among other bands with which Hall is associated are R. Cajun And The Zydeco Brothers, with which Proctor also plays, and Zydecomotion. Hall also operates Swamp Music, an organization that among many activities releases records and books artists, specializing in Cajun and zydeco bands. Among visiting Cajun musicians with whom the Bearcats have worked are John Delafose, Courtney Granger, Beau Jocque, Eddie LeJeune, D.L. Menard, Willis Prudhomme, Steve Riley (with whom they toured the UK in 1996), Tasso (the Cajun revival trio), Balfa Toujours and Sean Vidrine. Without exception, the visiting musicians have been high in praise for the Bearcats and their authentic sound. In addition to playing throughout the UK, the band has also toured Europe, this exposure helping bring awards to Hall, as Best Cajun Accordion Player in the European Cajun and Zydeco Awards, and to Proctor, who won as Best Cajun Fiddle Player. (NB: Not to be confused with the Canadian band of the same name.)
