Seemingly a UK duo comprising Beverley Thomas and Osmond Wright, the real power behind the Spirits are in fact the production powerhouse of Damon Rochefort (b. c.1965, Cardiff, Wales; ex-Nomads, etc.) and Aaron Friedman. The group’s debut single, ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’, featured soaring gospel vocals with bright piano interludes and instantly became a favourite on the UK dance floors. It also became that rarity in UK dance terms: it successfully crossed over to the US charts where it climbed to number 1. This came as a pleasant surprise to Thomas and Wright, the latter having been plucked from semi-obscurity in a gospel group where he had been writing his own material. The follow-up single, ‘Spirit Inside’, saw them repeat their success in the early 90s.
