Taking their musical starting point as ‘newgrass’, an American term for the cross-fertilisation of folk and bluegrass styles in an improvisational, free-flowing hybrid, UK’s Spice Trade are built around former Cajun swinger Chris Haigh (ex-Zumzeaux; fiddle). He has been joined in this new venture by several staples of the folk and jazz scene; Frank Kilkelly (also Companions Of The Rosy House; rhythm guitar), Rick Bolton (ex-Mike Westbrook and Happy End; lead guitar), and Dudley Phillips (ex-June Tabor, Mary Coughlan, Womaks, John Etheridge; double bass). The band’s first appearance outside of London came with the 1992 Shetland Folk Festival, and the heated critical reception afforded them there looks set to continue as they tour the mainland prior to their debut LP release.
