While taking a break from his full-time gig of Balloon Guy, guitarist, vocalist, drummer, keyboardist, and all around jack of trades Matt Olson recorded a number of songs on a borrowed four-track that didn't fit the styling of his aforementioned band. Although he never intended this fourteen song demo to go beyond his bedroom, Generator Records eventually released two cassettes by this one man band that Olson later coined Smattering. By incorporating lo-fi indie pop that's recorded on second hand equipment, Olson eventually started playing around his native Minneapolis with a backing band. After the 1995 full-length Sissy Bar and a three year hiatus, Smattering took the accompanied lineup of Scott Tretter (vocals/guitar/bass/piano), John Carroll-Seitz (vocals/drums), and Bill McGuire (vocals/keyboard/drums) in 1998 and released the nine song EP BOM that same year. After the 1999 release of the album Hallowed, Rajah Pink, Wading Pool Blue followed the next year.
