This Brighton, Sussex, England-based ‘trip-hop’ trio comprise Stefan, AJ (aka Adjaye) and Joe. Signed to James Lavelle’s Mo’ Wax Records in 1993, they played a large part in popularising both the label and what became known in the UK press as trip hop or ambient hip-hop. They made their debut with the smooth single, ‘2, 000’, which utilised a vibraphone to add musical texture. Allied to their long-standing jazz influences (John Coltrane, Miles Davis), plus samples from the Apollo space flights and electronic loops, the finished product added up to an aurally arresting and unusual musical vision.
