b. 14 January 1915, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA, d. 20 July 1976, San Diego, California, USA. A blues guitarist, influenced by Blind Lemon Jefferson, as well as a pianist, Jeffery worked with a carnival as a young man, snake-charming and boxing against all comers. He moved to California ‘with the rest of the Okies’ in the Depression, working as a car mechanic and playing piano on weekends, often at a club owned by Thomas Shaw. After his retirement, he made some festival appearances and recordings on piano in the 70s, and was still a good guitarist, although he insisted he had given it up.
