b. 20 May 1948, Mountain Home, Idaho, USA. Bennett grew up on a ranch and became immersed in the music of Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell. From the 60s, he has been fusing honky tonk with more contemporary sounds and, although he is hardly a singer, he has developed a hard rocking country style. In 1983, he tried his luck in Nashville without success. His 1989 release Pure Quill was highly acclaimed but Bennett - a huge, tattooed man with a handlebar moustache - is an unlikely star.
