Our Tribe is essentially Rob Dougan and Rollo Armstrong. They first met when Armstrong travelled to Australia with his friend Will Mount (later to become Gloworm) after finishing university, where he studied gynaecology. He met Dougan, who was then training to be an actor in Australia, signing a recording contract together for the rooArt label (nothing was released). On his return to England Rollo became a successful producer in his own right, and when Dougan emigrated they teamed up again. Their debut release for ffrr Records, ‘I Believe In You’, became a number 1 in the dance lists in the early 90s. Mel Medalie of Champion Records soon came along with the offer of both recording opportunities and their own subsidiary label (Cheeky). It was this that housed the duo’s ‘Understand This Groove’ (as Franke), Gloworm’s ‘I Lift My Cup’ and the OT Quartet’s ‘Hold That Sucka Down’, a Top 10 hit. Our Tribe went on to remix for U2 (‘Numb’), the Pet Shop Boys (‘Can You Forgive Her’, ‘Absolutely Fabulous’), M People (‘How Can I Love You More?’), Wonderstuff (‘Full Of Life’), Shola (‘Love, Respect & Happiness’), Raze (‘Break 4 Luv’) and Gabrielle (‘Dreams’). The duo was also behind the writing and production of Kristine W’s ‘Feel What You Want’ and Our Tribe, featuring Sabrina Johnston’s ‘What Hope Have I?’.
