Before playing with the catchy, alternately sad and happy Promise Ring, guitarist Jason Gnewikow broke into the indie rock underground with Madison, WI's None Left Standing. While the group's raging hardcore is far removed from the Promise Ring, it was similar to what Cap'n Jazz and future PR frontman Davey Vonbohlen were playing down in Chicago. Led by singer/bassist Timothy Burton, None Left Standing left pretensions for the poets and told the true stories of their lives and those of others, like Laura, who died at seven after being paralyzed by a drunk driver. The band titled its 1993 EP after her and put her picture on the cover.
