Mark Humphrey has been a freelance journalist since 1979. Until 1984, he was a frequent contributor to Frets, an acoustic stringed instrument magazine. His reviews and profiles have appeared in The Los Angeles Reader, Old Timey Music, Los Angeles Daily News, Guitar Player, Esquire, Journal of Country Music, Playboy, and others. Since 1983, he has been a regular contributor to Record Roundup; has written liner notes for Robert Wilkins' Memphis Gospel Singer, Blue Flame: A Sun Blues Collection, and for the forthcoming reissue on Muddy Waters' 70s CBS recordings. He is writing a booklet for a Lightnin' Hopkins and Otis Spann Mosaic reissue; has written "Prodigal Sons: Son House and Robert Wilkins" for the International Conference on African-American Music and Literature on religion versus secularity in African-American music; and is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist.
