An early 1960's dance outfit from the West Indies, Mango Jones and His Orchestra were recorded by Vee Jay records during the initial Ska boom of the early 1960's, in association with the Harry Ballu Singers. In those days, Ska was identified as a dance rhythm rather than a brand of music, and the band's sound is more generic than a lot of other material often identified as Ska. But they were there, and on record, practically before anyone else. The fate of Mango Jones, Harry Ballu et al remains a mystery, but we wish them well wherever they are.
