Madame Bongo is better known as the ex-wife of President Albert Bongo than for her singing career with Kunabeli de Masuku. In 1985, she was involved in a series of incidents resembling the plot of a soap opera. First, her husband made it illegal to record albums onto cassettes, which would prevent bootlegging and force consumers to buy records. Then rumors flew that Bongo had only done this to ensure that his wife's record sold well. Music stores protested by removing all of Madame Bongo's records from their shelves. Soon after, Madame Bongo left her husband for a musician.
