b. 21 September 1936, Crum, West Virginia, USA. A banjo player, Varney worked and recorded with artists such as Hylo Brown, Jim Horn, Ralph Stanley and Landon Messer And The Riverside Grass. He also played in and often led or was featured with several popular bands, including the Rocky Mountain Boys, the Rocky Mountain Pals and the West Virginia Boys. Among the songs in his repertoire can be found ‘Goin’ Back To West Virginia’, ‘I Learned About Heaven From Ma’, ‘It’s Too Soon For Me To Die’, ‘Banjo Pickin’ Boy From West Virginia’ and ‘Foggy Mountain Breakdown’, his version of the latter appearing on some bluegrass compilations.
