b. 7 March 1911, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. d. 21 March 1978, USA. Born into a musical family, Cottrell studied clarinet with Lorenzo Tio. After playing with local bands he spent the 30s touring with Don Albert with whom he also played tenor saxophone. At the end of the decade he returned to New Orleans where he played with bands such as those led by Paul Barbarin and Sidney Desvigne. He continued to play through the 50s and 60s with the bands of Barbarin and others, then formed his own band which he led for the remainder of his life. A sound and professional player, Cottrell’s spell with Albert displayed his ability to work effectively in surroundings other than the New Orleans style he favoured. His father was Louis Cottrell Snr. (1878-1927), an influential New Orleans drummer.
