America's traditional folk music has been given a modern twist by Albuquerque-based band Los Bubbadinos. Led by guitarist/composer Stefan Dill, the group uses a diverse mix of honky tonk, rockabilly, free jazz, and flamenco to create a unique sound that has been called Ernest Tubb meets Leon Redbone and Johnny Paycheck by way of the circa 1972 Magic Band. Dill has brought a multicultural dimension to the music of Los Bubbadinos. The son of a Mexican mother and a German-Irish father, he began playing guitar in the early '80s. The recipient of a master's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with improvisational saxophone player Joe Maneri, he successfully fuses his training in traditional flamenco, free jazz, and classical composition. In addition to performing as a soloist in Europe since 1992, he has accompanied Cecil Taylor and Guus Janssen.
