Emerging in the early years of the twenty-first century, this Scottish female vocal group attempted to break into the void left in the teen pop market by the demise of the Spice Girls. Formed in 2001 by Nikki (b. Nikki MacLachlan, 17 May 1981, Irvine, Scotland), Shonagh (b. Shonagh Strachan, 23 February 1985, Irvine, Scotland), Sarah (b. Sarah Cassidy, 14 May 1981, Glasgow, Scotland) and Lisa Harrison, Lemonescent signed a major label recording contract with Supertone/Universal shortly afterwards. The singles ‘Beautiful’, ‘Sex Dance’, ‘Help Me Mama’ and ‘Cinderella’ were released in 2003, the last two became Lemonescent’s first UK Top 40 hits. Harrison left the band shortly after the release of ‘Help Me Mama’, and Emma (b. Emma Cassidy, 7 January 1985, Glasgow, Scotland) and Leona (b. Leona Skimming, Glasgow, Scotland) were added to the line-up after a series of public auditions. Issued in October 2003, Lemonescent’s debut, Unconditional Love, featured the singles and plenty of sub-standard album tracks. The quintet toured with popular UK teen trio Atomic Kitten during early 2004.
