Lady B’s debut single was originally released in the mid-80s on the Tec label, based in Philadelphia, USA. Afterwards it was picked up by Sugarhill Records, who re-packaged it in a slightly re-recorded version. Entitled ‘To The Beat Y’All’, it told of Jill (from the nursery rhyme scenario of Jack and Jill fame) falling pregnant, rather than just down the hill, and advising her of her stupidity in not using contraception. Fellow Sugarhill act Sequence would come back at her with the answer record ‘Simon Says’, extending the onus of responsibility to the man.
