b. Zaire. A genuine character in African music, Dittman made his name as drummer to top stars such as Sam Mangwana, Kanda Bongo Man and Aurlus Mabele. His debut solo album was recorded in Berlin, Germany, in a fervent, vivid soukous style (despite the complete absence of guitars). An airline pilot by profession, Dittman based the album on research conducted into soukous throughout Africa. The nature of that research soon became obvious. The sleeve boasted the following effusive, autobiographical quote: ‘Dittman counts 67 children of his own, and of all colours, and he is in command of 42 women in love; I have all types of woman except a German police woman, which I am currently looking for to fill my pockets for the future, in this world of modern love.’
