This Johnny Brown, not to be confused with others bearing the name such as the bluesman Texas Johnny Brown, is a Kentucky picker and singer who has performed and recorded with leaders such as Dave Evans and his combo Red Wing. Some players from Brown's generation had a background in regional singles, not only in bluegrass but in the related genres of country and rockabilly. There is reason to believe this artist was responsible for a single entitled "Shame", although the song title in itself might be an explanation for his hesitance to take credit. The song, which can be heard on a compilation of White Label singles entitled Real Rockin' Now, should be especially satisfying for music critics looking for those rare songs that can be reviewed simply by repeating the title. A series of other '50s and '60s singles released under the name of Johnny Brown are not, however, the creations of this Kentucky picker but rather were a concoction of country singers Carl Cox and Norman McMillan. Songs by this duo such as "Shooting for the Moon" were issued under both the Carl and Norman name and Johnny Brown.
