b. 24 December 1934, London, England. Pianist Critchinson seemed to spring from nowhere in 1979 when he joined Ronnie Scott’s Quintet. In fact he had played semi-professionally for many years while retaining his non-musical ‘day job’. He had taken piano lessons early on, but he was a good player ‘by ear’ and was thus effectively self-taught. From 1980-83 he was with the highly successful Morrissey-Mullen band and continued with Scott: indeed he once toured with both bands simultaneously. He has also worked with drummer Martin Drew’s own group, and in the mid-90s formed a quartet with saxophonist Art Themen, bass player Fave Green, and drummer Dave Barry.
