b. Marion Mitchell, Seaham, Co. Durham, England. A former Windmill Theatre girl and sister of vocalist Valerie Mitchell, Janie Jones is more renowned for scandal than her brief recording career. Her several 60s singles included ‘Witches Brew’ (1965), a minor UK Top 50 hit popularized by pirate radio, but trials for blackmail, prostitution and payola irrevocably linked the singer with scandal. Imprisoned during the 70s, Janie was immortalized in song by the Clash who, as the Lash, provided the requisite backing on her subsequent punk-influenced single, ‘House Of The Ju-Ju Queen’ (1983).
