Murray’s early Broadway appearances included several revues before the musical Springtime Of Youth (1922). This had music by Walter Rollo and Sigmund Romberg, lyrics by Matthew C. Woodward and Cyrus Wood. Then came Caroline (1923), music by Edward Rideamus, Alfred Goodman and Edward Kunneke, book and lyrics by Harry B. Smith and Kunneke. Murray’s songs included ‘Hello, Hello’, duets with Tessa Kosta, ‘Land Of Enchantment’ and ‘Sweetheart’, and a trio ‘Who Cares For A Name’, with Kosta and John Adair. In 1924 Murray was in China Rose, music by A. Baldwin Sloane and book by Harry L. Cort and George E. Stoddard. He was in Captain Jinks (1925), music by Lewis E. Gensler and Stephen Jones, lyrics by Buddy De Sylva, and Castles In The Air (1926), music by Percy Wenrich, book and lyrics by Raymond Peck. Then came Rio Rita (1927), in which Murray played opposite Ethelind Terry in the title role. The show, which ran for almost 500 performances, had book by Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson, music by Harry Tierney and lyrics by Joseph McCarthy. Murray’s songs were ‘Following The Sun Around’, two duets with Terry, ‘Rio Rita’ and ‘If You’re In Love, You’ll Waltz’, and ‘March Of The Rangers’, with Harry Ratcliffe and Donald Douglas.
In the early 30s Murray was in East Wind (1931), a flop, despite music by Romberg and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and the revue Face The Music (1932), book by Moss Hart, music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. Murray sang ‘Manhattan Madness’ and three duets with Katherine Carrington, ‘On A Roof In Manhattan’, ‘Soft Lights And Sweet Music’ and ‘I Say It’s Spinach’. A 30s revue was Thumbs Up (1934), produced by Eddie Dowling who also appeared on stage, with music by James Hanley and Henry Sullivan and book and lyrics by H.I. Phillips, Harold Atteridge, Alan Baxter, Ballard MacDonald and Earle Crooker.
Among Murray’s film appearances were Happy Days (1929), in which he appeared as himself, Cameo Kirby, in which he starred in the title role, starring opposite Norma Terris, The Flame Song and A Nite In A Nite Club (both 1934), the latter another appearance as himself.
