Although based in the United States, all of the members of the five-man Grupo Arpex come from Mexico. They play the conjunto de arpa grande style of mariachi music, which developed in the western Mexico region of Tierra Caliente. Played on harp, two violins, and two guitars, the style also uses high-pitched, non-falsetto male vocals. Grupo Arpex's album ¡Tierra Caliente! was released on Smithsonian Folkways in 2006.
