Despite their name, French Kissing are from England rather than France, and their music evokes 1960s surf music, pop/rock and garage rock filtered through a 21st century garage punk sensibility instead of teenage make-out parties (though it wouldn't sound all that out of place on the hi-fi during a friendly game of Spin the Bottle). Featuring Chris Fenner, Dominic Haley, Sam Pillay, and Jonny Stafford, French Kissing formed in London in March 2009, and after an extended period of rehearsing, strategizing, and general hanging out (as Stafford told a reporter, "We were like the laziest band in the world, so we took a while to start gigging -- I think we started practicing properly around the summertime"), the band started playing out late that year and wasted little time gaining a reputation on the London club scene. In January 2010, French Kissing made their recorded debut on a compilation album from Holy Twist Records, Get Wyld!, Vol. One, devoted to bands playing "real rock & roll" in the U.K. On February 8, French Kissing issued their first single, "Oh Suzanne" b/w "The Lonely Streets of Cairo." Sleep All Day Records released the vinyl 7" in an edition of just 200 copies, quickly making it a collector's item, and the single earned plenty of enthusiastic reviews in the U.K. music press.
