A Nashville, Tennessee, USA based quintet of Marty McCall (vocals), Gary Pigg (vocals), Cindy Lipford (vocals), Lanny Avery (bass) and Chris Harris (drums), the members of Fireworks were all heavily immersed in contemporary Christian music before forming the band. McCall and Pigg had been involved in the career of Chris Christian as producers, and featured as backing singers on David Meece’s I Just Call On You and B.J. Thomas’ Home Where I Belong. They also worked on commercial jingles together. Avery had formerly worked as a studio engineer while Chris Harris had previously belonged to the Texas group, Brazos. The idea for Fireworks came when Pigg and McCall discovered their mutual interest in spiritual music when they met at a Nashville church. After working with Christian, they began to write their own songs together. They expanded to a three-piece with the addition of Lipford, playing at fellowships and local churches. Their three voices were originally accompanied solely by piano, until the group added Avery and Harris as full-time backing musicians. The group’s self-titled debut album followed for Myrrh Records.
