Regarded as one of South Africa's better rock bands, Elephant Sun have made a point of staying away from attempting to emulate American or British rock bands, incorporating not only progressive rock elements into their sound, but also African elements. Playing regular gigs and releasing a demo tape, the band built up a strong following and acquired enough money to record and release their debut CD, Perceptions, to positive response. In concert they are noted for their ability to move between very immediate hook-driven pop songs and lengthy semi-improvisational numbers such as "Owed to a Traffic Light," which has been known to go on for half an hour (the recorded version, on Perceptions, is a relatively trim seventeen minutes in length). As of 1998, Elephant Sun have yet to garner much attention outside of South Africa.
