b. Edward Fletcher. Bootee was formerly a New Jersey schoolteacher in Newark until the East Coast rap bug hit. As part of the Sugarhill Records house band/retinue, he wrote the chorus and several sections of ‘The Message’. He also contributed to ‘Message II’, ‘New York, New York’ and sundry other label hits. His debut solo album comprised a rap side and a song side, with the former seeing further assistance from old Sugarhill friends. Though the song side was disappointing, he proved himself a talented rapper and maintained his reputation as an accomplished lyricist on the rest of the album.
