b. 23 December 1916, Trinway, Ohio, USA. A pleasing guitarist, singer and songwriter, Unteed led his band, the Pinetop Mountain Boys, for several years, making a number of popular albums in the late 60s. Among regular members of the band were Danny Milhone (dobro/guitar), Jack Casey (guitar), Howard Hicks (fiddle), Ross Branham (banjo), and Dick Brickles (bass). Unteed, who also played the Jew’s Harp, was mainly featured as a singer on the group’s recordings. Mostly, the group’s recordings were of comic songs. Indeed, one of Unteed’s recordings often features in irreverent lists of unusually titled country songs: ‘Never Hit Your Grandma With A Shovel’. Unteed also worked as a producer and in this capacity was involved with Don Reno and Red Smiley for their 1972 recording, Together Again.
