This Canadian and Scottish duo comprised Clea McIlraith (guitar/vocals) and Cinders McLeod (b. Toronto, Ontario, Canada; double bass/vocals). They performed what were almost a cappella compositions (most evident on ‘Waves’) with sombre and angry lyrics, documenting the manipulation of women in the home and in the work place. The striking use of McLeod’s double bass which accentuated the impact of the duo’s harmonies, singled out the album as a critics favourite. The mini-album Beyond Our Means, which was dedicated to the International Wages For Housework Campaign, found a suitable home on Billy Bragg’s re-activated Utility label. Based in Glasgow, McLeod went on to become a cartoonist and book illustrator.
