Charles Lyonhart was born in the Bronx area of New York City, where he was raised around the modern folk-rock movement and the beat poet explosion that were both centered in the city. He eventually started writing his own fiction, songs, and even became a music journalist for a period. But by the '90s, he dedicated himself full-time to making music, becoming a regular at various venues around the state. He appeared at Woodstock '94 and began releasing albums through Continuum Records. By the next century, he was regularly performing around the country with his contemporaries and idols, as well as developing a strong following through his regular release schedule.
