b. Joseph Hill, 6 January 1937, Dunbar, West Virginia, USA, d. 17 November 1999, Los Angeles, California, USA. As a child Hill moved with his family to Akron, Ohio. In his mid-teens he lost the sight in one eye and over the following years vision of the other eye was obscured by glaucoma. One of the last in the long line of one-man bands, Hill sang raw and energetic songs, many of them his own untutored compositions, accompanying himself on harmonica, guitar, bass drum, cymbal and other instruments. Although the one-man band was often at best an eccentric form of street entertainment, Hill’s evident sincerity lifted this arcane form of music making to levels rarely achieved by others.
