From Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA, Becky Sharp formed in 1994 and initially released their debut album on the local independent Chemical City Records. The band used it primarily as a marketing tool to get bookings in other regions, but it also served to attract the attention of Mike Jacobs, who signed the band as the first group on his new Way Cool Music label, a subsidiary of MCA Records. Christopher Benton (guitar), Chris Wynn (bass) and John Kaufman (drums) were all formerly members of Girl Scout Heroin. They recruited singer/guitarist Gabe Dagle from another local band, Thoughts Of Mary. Their new name, Becky Sharp, was derived from the 1935 Technicolor film adaptation of Vanity Fayre. The band, which had previously toured with Better Than Ezra, then set out on a nationwide tour during the end of 1995 and the beginning of 1996 to promote their repackaged debut.
