Dominican singer/songwriter Gabi Gabardina started getting involved in popular music at a young age, mainly performing merengue, the well-known Afro-Caribbean vocal-driven dance music and one of the most popular rhythms from his native country. After participating in a tropical outfit called Café Colao, Gabi Gabardina formed different Dominican bands. He moved to New York in 1996, getting along with Banda del Pueblo and Caña Dulce before emerging as a leading singer of Banda Tuya (aka BT). The foursome debuted with the release of Malagradecida. The Prestige Recordings/Sony Discos-released Ironia followed in December 2001.
