Formed out of the San Francisco Bay Area in 1995, American Steel had a fondness for the likes of The Clash, Crimpshrine and Jawbreaker in which was so strong, they just had to start their own band. Consisting of Ruairi (vocals/ guitar), Ryan (guitar), John (bass) and Scott (drums), American Steel brought on a poppy, '77 influenced sound to the California coast in which not only got them some local attention from the California coast, but it also inspired New Disorder Records to release their "Hope Wanted" EP in 1997. After a coast-to-coast tour of the Untied States later on that year, their self-titled full-length succeeded the following year.
