b. Alan Lawrence Turnbull, 23 November 1943, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Turnbull began playing drums as a child and was working professionally while still in his early teens. During the 60s he played with several of Australia’s leading jazz musicians, including Don Burrows, with whom he continued to play during succeeding decades making appearances at festivals in Europe and the USA. Turnbull is a skilled bop mainstreamer and is in much demand as an accompanist to jazz stars, including Milt Jackson, Phil Woods and George Cables.
