Yombo shows the international influence of Tshala Muana's sound, Mutuashi. Recorded in Paris, it has elements from the Congo, Cameroon, the Ivory Coast, and the discotheques of the French capitol. Her style is more varied and percussion-driven than guitar-dominated soukous. Although somewhat heavy at times on the synthesized backbeat, the more engaging material are the tracks that pour out the infectious Mutuashi mix. There are a couple of tracks that are filled with this rather than drum machines, but not nearly enough. Muana's voice, however, is still one of the best of the female Congolese singers.
