True North is a collaboration between Amir Baghiri and Mathias Grassow. It is a natural that these ambient giants would forge a musical relationship and bring their styles together. Grassow's deep drones complement Baghiri's ethnic ambience. Baghiri's deep minimalism fits perfectly with Grassow's expansive atmospheres. Grassow and Baghiri recorded this around the time that desert ambience was enjoying increased popularity -- at least as much popularity as the style could claim. And this fits the style; it is just a different kind of desert. True North takes listeners to vast wastelands beyond the Scandinavian fjords, to the frozen tundras north of the Arctic Circle. The atmospheres speak to the desolation of the Arctic regions. This is a different kind of tribal minimalism. Grassow and Baghiri embrace northern tribes. This is an essential disc for serious collectors. Casual fans will find it interesting.
