It's always interesting to see what Western music is recorded for and marketed to Japan's large segment of classical music consumers. The early music movement has made great strides in Japan with the international success of conductor Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan, and the great melodies of the Baroque have always had a foothold there. Yet it's a little hard to say what the interest might be in two discs of Albinoni oboe concertos, performed by Swiss oboist Thomas Indermühle (and second oboist Jacques Tys in the composer's various double oboe concertos) and the modern-instrument group I Solisti di Perugia under conductor Claudio Brizi. I Solisti di Perugia has performed and recorded frequently in Japan, and seems to be the main attraction: it has the rich string sound and the full blend between strings and continuo (often Brizi's organ here) that have always been popular in Japan. Albinoni's oboe concertos, published in two sets in 1715 and 1722, predated Vivaldi's first essays in the form. Although Vivaldi's brilliantly showy expansions of the concerto form were clearly in the air, Albinoni avoided them here in favor of the older, mostly Corellian model, with dense, often contrapuntal outer movement and short, simple adagios in the middle (all the concertos are in three movements). They're well wrought if not absolutely compelling played one after the other, and there's nothing here that should dissuade anyone wanting to make a close study of the music; Indermühle is an accurate player of the treacherous oboe. Camerata's bright, up-close church sound is in line with the overall aims of the music. Booklet notes, apparently different in the two languages and not simply translated, are in Japanese and English.
