For pop music centrists who have been daunted by the sobriety and pacing of sacred Tibetan chants, this attractive book/CD combo may be the ticket to enlightened listening. Monks from two great Tibetan monasteries (Khampagar and Loseling) perform their extended chants alone, with focus on the extraordinary voices, and in combination with traditional trumpets, cymbals, and percussion. The 64-page book, chock-full of pictures and bite-size essays, helps with the entry into the music, but the music itself is so compelling and beautifully recorded that anyone who makes the effort to abandon the usual search for hooks, refrains, and other instant gratifications will be rewarded with an impressive experience.
