Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers were only together as a recording unit for 18 months, but thanks to classic singles like “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?,” which appeared in 1956 from Gee Records, their legacy was immediately assured. Lymon was only 13-years-old when that side was released and in many ways he wasn’t ready for the lifestyle that went with being a professional singer and first wave rock star. He left the group in 1957 for a solo career and by 1968 he was gone from this veil, dying from a drug overdose at the age of only 26. This two disc set collects one disc of Lymon with the Teenagers with a second disc of Lymon solo and pretty much covers things. “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?” is here, and even though it’s now the 21st century, the essential question of that song is still unanswered. Fools fall in love, one assumes, because they must.
