The Môns are quite possible the oldest people in the region which now comprises Thailand, Burma, and Cambodia. For a long time, they were mainly living in Burma. Because of the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, the Thai left the Chinese province of Yunnan and established themselves in what is now known as Thailand. But the Mongols were able to invade Burma, forcing the Môns to move also to Thailand. The arts of the Môns, in particular graphic arts, music, and dance, had a strong influence on the Burmese, Khmer, and Thais. The Môns orchestra is mostly made of percussion (xylophones, metallophones, hanging gongs, and drums), but we find as well an oboe typical of this region (the instrument is found among the Môns, Thais, or Cambodian). Although this CD is said to presents the music of these people, all the melodies are of Thai origin, played in a Thai style, but in a much faster tempo, typical of Môns music. We must remember that Thai music has been previously influenced by Môns music. A real discovery!
