The four jam sessions recorded by Gus Statiras of Progressive Records in 1977 were well-intentioned if a bit "by-the-numbers." On this set six trombonists (Art Baron, Gerry Chamberlain, Mickey Gravine, Jimmy Knepper, Rod Levitt and Sonny Russo) each solo (in alphabetical order) on a six-song ballad medley and the nearly 17-minute "Gus' Slide" (which is based on "I Got Rhythm"); the closing riotous ensemble is fun. Solid support is offered by pianist Roland Hanna, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, bassist Earl May and drummer Ronnie Bedford. Overall Knepper and the wa-waaing Baron take honors.
