AllMusic Review by

Jimmy C. Newman had several country hits in the 1950s, including the often-covered "Cry, Cry Darling," and while his bread and butter has always been in the direction of traditional Louisiana 2-step material, his approach was never strictly purist. This set collects some of his early sides for Dot Records, including the original 1954 version of "Cry, Cry Darling," and it shows an artist really more country than swamp, although that bayou sound is never far removed. Moving to MGM Records in 1958, Newman continued making similar records, culminating in "Alligator Man" (not included here) a decade later.
