AllMusic Review by

A perfect complement to The Bob Wills Anthology, this two-LP set from 1987 does not duplicate any of the earlier compilation's performances. Bob Wills' Texas Playboys were the most influential of all Western swing bands, setting the standard for other groups to follow. This very interesting collection has 32 lesser-known but rewarding performances including 13 previously unissued selections (many of which are alternate takes). Drawn from Wills' prime years, the spirited renditions feature such top musicians as fiddlers Jesse Ashlock and Louis Tierney, the great steel guitarist Leon McAuliffe and pianist Al Stricklin in addition to singer Tommy Duncan and Wills himself on fiddle. Highly recommended, at least until Columbia gets around to having a more complete series on CD.
